Place the Disclosure Where the Recommendation Is Read

A reader should encounter the relevant context in time.

A useful distinction

A disclosure can be overlooked when it is far from the recommendation or appears only after the reader follows a link. Layout therefore affects communication. A site-wide footer is a different location from the decision point in an article.

Put it into practice

Review a fictional page in reading order and note when the compensated recommendation appears. Check that the explanation is available there in normal text. Do not rely on a hidden menu, hover state or a separate article to provide information a new reader needs in this context.
